Acer Chromebook's first run

today my Acer Chromebook arrived:

box - nicely small

as I don't read a lot of instructions, I put the battery in, attached it to it's power supply, waited till it was fully loaded (which was amazingly fast) and

turned in ON - it guides you through the initial set-up process

Steps:
  1. find your wireless network (ok this I knew how to do)
  2. type in the password of your wireless network - OMG, where do I find this??? - after 90 minutes of desperate searching I finally looked UNDER my modem - yes, there it was
  3. login with you gmail/ google account (and do NOT start a guest session - these don't have any admin privileges at all)
  4. enjoy :-) - Chrome synchronizes EVERYTHING (ok mostly everything) of the settings you have in your Chrome-Browser on your "big" PC/ Schleppi
  5. and *happydance* my wireless mice (Logitech and HP) DO work with the Acer Chromebook, without having to install any software

decision process

after I had decided to move into the cloud(computing), I needed to find out, if I would like the Acer or the Samsung Chromebook (both WiFi only)

both are fairly identical, I created a comparison spreadsheet for these two, to help myself to come to a decision, this comparison chart I now published on my features page

summary of some differences:

  • battery life: Samsung has a longer battery life
  • display size: Samsung has 12.1 inches, Acer 11.6 inches
  • display "content": Acer has 1366 x 798 resolution, and Samsung 1280 x 800 resolution
  • external screen output: Acer has a HDMI output (to which I can attach my big 27 inch screen digitally), Samsung a Mini-VGA-dongle, only the analogue port would work
  • the Acer has a replaceable battery unit, the Samsung is all "glued in one piece"

the higher resolution and the HDMI output made all the difference to me:

the Acer it will be
